Ian Colloings
A few weeks ago, I spent the morning with artist Ian Collings in his Ojai studio, photographing a new body of work before it made its way north to Point Reyes.I've known Ian for years and have always admired his dedication to the craft. Listening to him talk about stone, wood, landscape, and time is a reminder that meaningful work isn't rushed. His relationship with these materials feels less like something he's shaping and more like an ongoing conversation that has unfolded over decades. As we moved through the studio, I found myself paying as much attention to the space as I did the sculptures. The worn worktables, the collected stones, the tools, the light moving across the room. Everywhere I looked there was evidence of a life built around paying close attention. Those are the moments I'm always drawn to as a photographer. Not just the finished work, but the environment that quietly reveals the person behind it.Thank you for the invitation, my friend. It was a privilege to spend time with the work before it left home.
